Originally known as Saint Mary Mother of God German Catholic Cemetery, this graveyard is now known simply as Saint Mary’s Catholic Cemetery. It is one of the oldest in the region, with burials a dating back to the mid-1860s. For decades, the cemetery has provided one of the most beautiful locations and settings for internment, with traditional Catholic services offering a variety of options for visitors, including traditional in-ground burial or entombment in a mausoleum, cremation with scattering options, in-ground burial or entombment in mausoleum niches.
Old yet still readable upright tombstones found throughout the property of St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery offer visitors a sense of history gained by meandering through different sections of the property. Located in the District of Columbia, Saint Mary's is filled with towering statues, tombstones and monuments to the dearly departed, many of whom offer testament to multiple generations of the same family.
Near the entrance are six private family crypts. One features a lovely pieta. Another has the head of Christ in agony on the cross. Other Catholic religious images can be found through the cemetery -- angels, the Virgin Mary, saints and crosses. Although established as a German graveyard, many of the names are in Italian and many of the most notable monuments portray the Italian aesthetic. This is most highly evident in a row of about a dozen family mausoleums along Saint Mary’s northern edge which borders the Institute of Carmelite Studies chapel and publishing house. The most photographed monuments in the Camelite complex is the DiGiulian memorial.
